Dump and Run
Dump and Run is an end-of-year college waste prevention program aimed toward redirecting student behavior from dumping slightly used or new personal items, in the trash, before leaving campus. Started in 2000, the concept has slowly been permeating college and university campuses, making an impressive dent in lowering the tonnage of solid waste collected and the amount of personnel and financial resources typically required at the end of an academic year.
The program works when campus administrators, environmental specialists and students team up with local nonprofit organizations to plan educational programs and energizing marketing events about Dump and Run during the school year. As a result of these activities, students begin to engage in dialogue about personal consumption habits, the environment and their less fortunate neighbors. The culmination of effort comes to fruition during move-out days on campus when the collection process is set up to accept student donations, such as: electronics, sports equipment, furniture, clothing, etc.
Gleaned items are sorted, organized and priced for a mega community sale shortly thereafter. As a result, trash is turned into cash for community nonprofits, university dollars are not spent on dumpsters and removal, municipal landfills remain a little lighter and more importantly, gently used items are given a second chance or new life.
The Dump and Run program helps students:
- Think about their behavior when it comes to discarding items and materials no longer needed at the end of the school year.
- Participate in a positive solution by donating items to a charitable organization(s) that will help in getting these materials to those who can use them.
- Employ good waste prevention strategies that can be transferred and utilized in their post-academic lives.
Your ReSource is ready and willing to launch the first official Dump and Run program in New Jersey.
